When his mother gets back together with her ex, in a self-destructive relationship overshadowed by the haze of substances, teenager Gigi gives her an ultimatum: your lover or me. When she refuses to choose, the kid runs away from home, quits school, and starts roaming Brussels, as he imagines and dreams of, relying on the help of friends and his street smarts to make some quick money. Despite its brisk pace and the comedic touches that decisively enhance it, despite its indisputable main character, Putain forgoes the safety of the coming-of-age approach in favor of the bigger picture, the contemporary urban reality, full of flaws and inequalities. It builds conflicts, charges the arising dilemmas with vibrancy, and treats every single one of the characters on screen with great regard and tenderness. A series whose heart beats fiercely in the present, for the children – whatever their age - of a lesser god, who are struggling to remain afloat in the melting pot of the big city, in every conceivable and inconceivable way.
