LA SOUFRIERE

Germany 1977 30 Digibeta Color

Film description

In 1976, scientists noted anomalous activity in the Soufriere volcano on the island of Guadeloupe. Their unanimous opinion was that the volcano was about to erupt and engender a catastrophe. The 75,000 people living on the southern end of the island were evacuated, but it was reported that a farmer had refused to leave the mountainside. Herzog, attracted by this extreme situation, brought two cameramen with him to the volcano so that they could witness the eruption, which promised to be the equivalent of five or six atomic bombs.
