BOXING CUBA

Greece 2010 47 Digital Beta Color

Film description

Cuba is the only country in the world that has two boxers who have one three Olympic gold medals each. Teofilo Stevenson and Felix Savon have had many offers to go professional and earn millions of dollars but they simply were not interested in leaving their country. In 1962, Fidel Castro prohibited all professional sports as being contrary to the ideals of the revolution, adding that “professional sports enrich the few at the expense of the many.” Together with their glorious careers and their refusal to become professional boxers for profit, the film clearly conveys Cuba’s resistance to capitalism.
