He was born in Bucharest in 1977 and graduated in 2003 from the Filmmaking Department of Bucharest’s Media University. He worked as assistant director on feature films shot in Romania and also directed many commercials. His short film The Tube with a Hat is the most successful Romanian short film of all time and won grand prizes at numerous international film festivals. Ηis first feature film The Happiest Girl in the World won the NHK/Filmmaker Award in Sundance 2008 and the CICAE Award at the Berlinale 2009. His second feature film, Everybody in Our Family, received the Heart of Sarajevo Award and the Bayard d’Or at the Festival International du Film Francophone de Namur, among other awards. Aferim! is his third feature film.
